Introduction to Sounds Logical M-Packs

Table Of Contents

M-Packs from Sounds Logical are a collection of MATLAB® toolboxes which extend the power of MATLAB in the field of digital audio. The first in the series, M-Pack 1, is a collection of MATLAB (m- and mex-) functions designed to facilitate processing of WAV files of arbitrary size, significantly extending MATLAB's built-in WAV file handling functionality.

In addition to the specialized functions, the M-Pack includes a set of utility functions (the M-Utilities in the table above).

In order to use the M-Packs software, you must have MATLAB 6.0 (R12) or later installed on your computer. Previous versions of MATLAB are not formally supported by Sounds Logical for use with the M-Packs. However some of the M-Pack functions (namely those which do not utilize mex functions or MATLAB 6 features such as function handles etc) may work with MATLAB 5.x. Use at your own risk..

The only platform supported by M-Packs is: Microsoft Windows 98, Me, NT4.0, 2000, or XP on an IBM-compatible PC.

M-Packs are a separate product from the WaveWarp Audio Toolbox for MATLAB. You do not require the WaveWarp Audio Toolbox for MATLAB in order to use M-Packs.

Installation & unlocking codes

Table Of Contents

The distributed product consists of a single self-extracting archive installer (a ".exe" file). After downloading this installation file, double-click (or "Run" it) to activate the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to completion.

IMPORTANT: you require an unlocking code in order to install the M-Pack software. This unlocking code is contained in your invoice which was sent to you at the e-mail address you specified when purchasing the software.

IF YOU NEVER RECEIVED OR HAVE MISPLACED YOUR INVOICE BY THE TIME YOU ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THE SOFTWARE, PLEASE CARRY OUT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS (IN ORDER OF PRIORITY):

    1. If you have internet access now, click here for direct access to the M-Pack registration pages (otherwise, establish internet access, visit www.soundslogical.com, and navigate to the M-Pack Support -> Unlocking Code pages). Follow the on-screen instructions to obtain your unlocking code.

    2. If you cannot establish internet access, contact license@soundslogical.com. After we re-confirm your purchase, your unlocking code will be e-mailed to you.

    3. If you cannot establish e-mail contact, call us at one of the numbers listed below. Specify to the operator that you require your software unlocking code, quoting your name and e-mail address. After we re-confirm your purchase, your unlocking code will be e-mailed to you.

        US (toll-free): 1-888-819-6271
        International: +1-602-231-6997

IMPORTANT:

    1. If you have a previous installation (or a demo version) of the M-Pack(s) on your computer, then you are strongly advised to run the respective Uninstaller(s) to remove them before attempting to install the current full version. Failure to uninstall previous versions may lead to conflicts and problems with the current version.

    2. Some of the M-Pack code is different for different versions of MATLAB. Therefore you must re-install (via the installer from Sounds Logical) the M-Packs, selecting the appropriate MATLAB version during the installation.

Help Desk Access

Table Of Contents

In addition to the usual MATLAB help text for each function, (i.e. accessed by typing help <function> at the MATLAB prompt), each M-Pack function has an HTML help page integrated with the M-Pack Help Desk (requires a Java-enabled Web Browser such as Netscape Navigator v4 or higher, or Microsoft Internet Explorer v4 or higher).

From the MATLAB prompt, the Help Desk page corresponding to a given <function> can be opened by typing slmhelp <function> (or, equivalently, slmhelp('<function>'). For example, typing:

>> slmhelp wavin

at the MATLAB prompt will open the file called wavin.html located in the slmhelpdocs/html subdirectory of the M-Pack root directory.

Typing slmhelp without an argument re-opens this Help Desk main page.

Typing :

>> slmhelp -pdf

opens the pdf file called slmhelpdesk.pdf located in the slmhelpdocs subdirectory of the M-Pack root directory. This document contains the entire collection of M-Pack Help Desk pages.

Typing :

>> slmhelp -web

opens the Sounds Logical Technical Support Web page (requires internet access).

Warning about paths: the documentation files for all M-Packs are located in the slmhelpdocs subdirectory which must be located in the M-Pack root directory in order for the slmhelp command to successfully locate the documentation. By default, this directory structure is established correctly during the product installation. It is therefore not recommended that you move these documentation files (relative to the M-Pack root) thereafter. If you wish to re-locate the M-Pack directories, the document subdirectory should be moved accordingly.
