Dynamic Range Controllers:

Audio Normaliser

Functional Description
Normalises the amplitude of the audio signal to unity, over an averaging time determined by the Attack ("AT") and Release ("RT") parameters (adjustable via the Parameter Window). The adjustable output gain is applied to the signal after the normalisation.

NOTE: This component is useful for the prevention of digital clipping (as an efficient alternative to the use of a Limiter).

Algorithm
The normalisation is performed by dividing the input signal by a time-averaged measurement of its peak value. See [Zo] section 7.2.1 for information on audio level measurement algorithms. The time-averaging is performed with first-order low-pass filtering.
Signal Implementations
Audio signals Control signals Description
Single input single output mono-mono n/a Mono input is normalised, and sent to the mono output.
Single input single output mono-stereo n/a Mono input is normalised, and sent (in duplicate) to the two stereo output channels.
Single input single output stereo-mono n/a Each input channel is normalised using a peak measurement averaged over the two input channels. The normalised values are then averaged and sent to the mono output.
Single input single output stereo-stereo n/a Each input channel is normalised using a peak measurement averaged over the two input channels. The separate normalised values are then sent to the individual stereo outputs.
