Distortion:

Simple distortion

Functional Description
Distortion effect produced by amplification followed by clipping. The characteristics of the distortion depend on the settings of the amplifier ("overdrive") and the clipper. All quantities are adjustable via the Parameter Window, as summarised in the following table. Stereo signals have separate adjustments for left and right channels.

Parameter Purpose
"Boost" slider Sets the gain ("Total boost") of the overdrive amplifier. The gain is equal to the slider value multiplied by the "Max value" range selection.
"Upper" slider Sets the upper clipping threshold applied to the amplified signal. Any signal amplitude which exceeds this threshold will be clipped to the threshold value.
"Lower" slider Sets the lower clipping threshold applied to the amplified signal. Any signal amplitude below this threshold will be clipped to the threshold value.
"Symmetric clipping" checkbox If selected (the most common scenario), the lower threshold is forced to equal the negative of the upper threshold, so that the clipping is symmetric about the zero level.
"Clip to +/- 1" checkbox If selected, the threshold sliders are overridden and the audio is clipped to within +/- 1.
"Output gain" slider Scales the overall amplitude of the output signal (after the clipping has been applied).

Algorithm
Floating-point arithmetic.
Signal Implementations
Audio signals Control signals Description
Single input single output mono-mono n/a Effect applied to mono input, sent to mono output
Single input single output mono-stereo n/a Effect applied to mono input with separate settings for left and right stereo output channels
Single input single output stereo-mono n/a Effect applied with separate settings to left and right stereo input channels, then averaged and sent to mono output
Single input single output stereo-stereo n/a Effect applied with separate settings to left and right stereo input channels for left and right stereo output channels, respectively
